for: trumpet, piano
duration: 6 minutes

Throughout the trumpet's history, perhaps its most enduring role in music and myth is that of the messenger. Direct Message imagines the trumpet assuming this traditional role in the contemporary environment of an online instant message exchange. What follows is a dialogue between two characters with very different approaches to their virtual interaction: the trumpet is cautious, hesitant, often appearing to edit its message even in the process of delivering it; the piano, by contrast, types fluently and interjects confidently. The trumpet does its best to keep returning to its original message (first presented solo), and, after a series of diversions, finally succeeds in delivering it.
Direct Message was recorded and released on the Orchid Classics label in October 2018 by Matilda Lloyd and John Reid.
