Dark Sayings (2018) was written for the Choirs of Norwich Cathedral, Ely Cathedral, and Peterborough Cathedral, commissioned by the Norfolk & Norwich Festival. The title is an intriguing term found throughout the Bible, roughly synonymous with 'proverb'; a dark saying is a short, allegorical expression employed by prophets and psalmists alike, which raises the popular 'riddle' to the dignity of elaborate production. The text for this piece is comprised of verses from various psalms, all of which paint vivid pictures of speech and language, proclaiming and listening, mouths and ears... This idea, of a very direct and tangible form of communication between God and mankind, was a particularly exciting source of inspiration for the piece.
Dark Sayings was first performed by the Choirs of Norwich, Peterborough & Ely Cathedrals, conducted by Ashley Grote, with Lizzie Scorah (harp) and Joby Burgess (percussion).
